NIR in counter terrorism

A paper from the Proceedings of SPIE 8546, Optics and Photonics for Counterterrorism, Crime Fighting, and Defence VIII, shows the potential of NIR for use in liquid screening at airports.

Detection of bottled liquid explosives by near infrared by Hide Itozaki, Ryu Miyamura and Hideo Sato-Akaba of Osaka University, Japan, describes a NIR-based bottled liquid scanner for screening liquids to be carried onto aircraft that they are developing. Tests at an international airport in Japan have received favourable reactions from security staff.
